1. Scan
Most digital paintings start as a sketch in pencil on paper. Scan in the sketch, setting your scanner to Black & White Photo (or equivilent). I usually scan in images at 300dpi to get a better resolution.

Your sketch will be the outline for your painting. Some artists keep the line drawing, others get rid of it once the painting is done. Whether you keep it or not is up to you and your style of painting.
